What is Radon?
Radon is a radioactive gas that is the second leading cause of lung cancer, second only to cigarette smoking. It is odorless, tasteless, and colorless. Radon gas is released by uranium in rocks and soil. The radon gas moves through the soil freely because it is chemically non-reactive and does not combine with other materials. Radon mitigation is the best way to begin to protect your family.
This deadly gas can accumulate under the foundation and slab of your home and can easily enter through any cracks or openings. This can cause high indoor concentrations. When high concentrations of radon are in the air that you breathe, it can lodge into the lungs and cause lung tissue to become damaged.
The entire state of Iowa is in Zone 1 which means that the homes in the entire state of Iowa have higher than the average levels of radon. The average level of radon throughout the United States is 1.3 pCi/L. Homes in Iowa have an average radon concentration of 8.5 pCi/L. Iowa leads the nation in the percentage of homes over the 4 pCi/L action level.
It is important to have a professional come and perform radon testing in your home. The experts at Jerry’s Waterproofing have been trained in radon testing and mitigation and are licensed in the states of Iowa and Nebraska.
How Do You Prevent Radon in Your Iowa Home?
Jerry’s Waterproofing will come and test your home for radon. Two types of radon testing can be done. They are:
- Short-term – This testing includes a charcoal canister that is left in place for 2 to 7 days. This is useful for quick screening of radon levels which can indicate the potential for a problem. This testing is done at the lowest level of the home, preferably during the winter months. Short-term radon testing is done when you need the results fast as in a real estate transaction.
- Long-term – Radon levels can vary significantly from day-to-day. A long-term radon test will give a more accurate idea of the average radon level in your home.
The professionals at Jerry’s Waterproofing will test your home and offer you radon mitigation if we find that your radon levels are high in your Iowa home. We use the sub-slab depressurization (SSD) system for radon mitigation. We will install a negative vent (PVC) system that is installed below the foundation of your home and extends up and ends above ground level.
Having Jerry’s Waterproofing test your home for radon and preventing radon from entering your home will give you peace of mind and keep your family safe from the harm of radon gas. Not only is it the second leading cause of lung cancer, but can cause other respiratory issues such as:
- Respiratory lesions
- Pulmonary fibrosis
- Chronic pneumonia
